I need to know what causes dogs to lose hair on their back. I have five other animals around him and none of them are having the problem. He is always itching his back. It is just on his back. Any help would be appreciated. I have him an appointment but not until tomorrow.

my dog had this same problem, and it was because he developed an allergy to his food. we switched his food,and his hair grew back and the itching stopped. good luck, and i hope your problem is as easy to solve as mine was.

There are only two things that come to mind, Mange and Fleas.

If fleas they can treat him, Mange can be treated but only if it is not advanced.

Mange the animal loses all hair and gets sores on hind quarters...

It could be a variety of things.

It could be he's just excessively shedding. It's that time of year when the weather changes and a dog's undercoat falls out. It could be allergies - have you changed anything in his diet lately? It could be allergens from outdoors, too. It could be some kind of nutrient deficiency that is drying out his skin. A vet will be able to give you a better idea. In the meantime, I'd brush him to help get the dead hair out of his coat and give him lots of lovin. :)

anytime a pet of any kid loses it's hair it's b/c of a poor diet I'm told

so maybe it is the food he/she is getting

try some thing new with vitamins in it.

Your dog has mange, an allergy or auto immune disease. In any case, he needs to see a vet.
