That's a very nice thing about the breed that I raise. their hair doesn't stink when wet. I'm gonna research and see if i can find out why others do... I'll post here if I find.
Ok, here it is..Getting wet activates, or stimulates the odor of sebum (oil on the surface of skin) . Also bacteria grow in the skin oils, and that is why some dogs smell stronger than others.
I breed Afghan hounds, and they have no wet dog odor, so must have very little skin oil. Its a good thing, because I live where it rains 110 inches per year!
Why does a dog's hair stink when it gets wet?
Everything smells when wet, some odors are more pronounced.
