I just bought a German Shepherd puppy a few days ago. He has tan (maybe light brown) paws, chest and belly, and a little on his face. He has a black snout, back, and tail.
He's only 11 weeks old, and looks great. Though I'd like it if he was a little lighter. Is it possible for some of his black hair to turn lighter as he gets older? My dad said once the hair turns dark, it never gets lighter. But I read some things on the internet about other dogs that change to a lighter color as they get older.
Does anyone here know for sure? Thanks

Yes, there is a good chance that will start to happen over the coarse of a few months. I have a 1 year old Shepherd we named her Onyx (meaning a type of black jem or Jewel). Her name was onyx because she was all black with only tan paws when we first got her. But, as she grew the tan on her paws came up to her legs and under her belly and her dark black lightened out. So, basically right now she has a black sattle on her back and mixed black on her neck and tail.
Hope that healped :)

I know that my poodle and springer spaniel both turned grey as they got older. The springer's liver and white color is still the same, but around her mouth and eyes it is getting grey, just like an old person. The poodle changed from black and white to white and dark grey.
