Is there a home remedy to untangle dog hair?

I have a Bichon Frise and his hair really gets matty.

Okay I am a Pet groomer and I can help, do not bathe your dog if it has matts in its hair rule #1 it will only cement them in worse.

#2. Get a slicker brush and brush daily

#3.Get a medium course metal comb and use to go through the hair after the brus hto catch anything it may have missed.

#4 It is very important to maintain Bichon's on 4-6 week grooming schedule with a Professional Pet Groomer. Find one that offers all of the above with the standard grooming,: A double bath, conditioning treatment, hand blown drying (fluff's beautifully and helps get out the dead hair), Ear cleaning, and hair removal from the ear canal, and toe nails which should be done monthly.

When you go to give your pet a bath at home make sure you brush it first otherwise you will have a bigger problem if it's hair is matted if you already have you might need to go to your groomer and see if the hair is not too matted to be brushed out. Any more questions feel fre to e-mail me!!!!!

Comb him at least daily. Otherwise shave him. Other than that, you can sit there with a comb, and hair by hair untangle the mess.

Go to your pet store and purchase a grooming tool called the "furminator". It is not cheap, but you will save loads on salon costs! Customer service is number one at Petsmart, so ask an associate if they will help you.

Bichons need daily brushing to prevent matting of their coat. You need to get a proper set of brushes and work with the dog on a daily basis and just like you need to brush your hair (if you don't have it shaved down regularly) on a daily basis and keep it clean, so does your dog. That is the only 'home remedy' to it and it is sad that the breeder didn't help you know that before you got the dog.

You need to comb daily, but if you are finding more knots then normal with routine brushing, you can try sprinkling a tiny bit of corn starch on her fur, it can make it easier to comb out knots and absorb a bit of oil in her fur that adds to tangling. On dry fur btw, not wet. I find it far easier to get mats out of dry fur then wet in my experience, as water tightens up knots more.

First the furminator will not work on a bichon . It is made for shedding dogs. The bichon doesn't shed. I would get a good leave on conditioner and work it out with a slicker and a comb. give your pup lots of breaks then when you get out the tangles take the dog to a professional groomer and have a medium length cut done on your pup. It will look neater and will be easy er to care for . Good luck and if all else fails take the dog to a groomer and have it shaved for a fresh start . Just to let you know that damaged hair tangles quicker so if you do get the pup combed out you will need to really keep up on the brushing or you will end up in the same situation again.

Actually, there is a very cheap product that works great, if you don't mind the smell while you are working out all the mats.

Don't laugh, promise. WD-40! It can be purchased anywhere; Walmart, hardware store, gas station or you may have it in your garage already. I use it on my horses mane and tail and it works beautifully! And the smell goes away after the bath.

Do NOT bath the dog first. Get a good slicker brush and steel comb. Spray liberally, and gently work on the mats. Repeat spraying throughout the process. It takes time, you may be at it for a hour or more (depending on how matted) the dog is. Once the mats are completely removed down to the skin; shampoo twice with a good quality dog shampoo. I use Mane and Tail shampoo and conditioner, even on my show dogs. Towel dry and use a hairdryer on low as you brush your dog dry.

I'v used every horse (and dog) product known to man, including Show Sheen, and NOTHING works better than WD-40. Years ago I used to show standard poodles with 15 inches of show coat on them; again the WD-40 worked miracles. Competitors always wanted to know how I kept their coats so perfect...my secret...now shared with you.

Caution; while working on the dog don't let anyone light any cigarettes. If you can stop laughing long enough to give it a try, you will be pleasantly surprised. Good luck.
