Removing hair from around an injury on a dog?

My dog has a cut on his muzzle and of course it's Saturday of a long weekend. It's about 3/4" and not too deep.

Is there any relatively safe way to remove the hair from around the injury to allow wound closures to stick or a bandage to stick over it? To keep it protected?

Obviously on the muzzle there isn't any good way to wrap it in gauze without bandaging the poor dogs mouth shut and I don't think that is a good idea overnight.

Here's what the pros do:

Get a new tube of KY jelly or water based lubricatant. Squeeze a big dollop right into the wound. It won't hurt it cause it is new which means it is sterile and it doesn't have anything in it to irritate the wound.

You can now clip the hair with clippers right up to the borders of the wound. Hair will get trapped in the jelly, not in the wound. When you are done you can wipe or rinse it out and clean up the wound with hydrogen peroxide, apply some neosporin in it and it should be okay until you can have it looked at by a vet.

You can do this if the wound isn't actively bleeding and it just needs to be cleaned up.

I wouldn't bamdage but if the dog will let just use a good pair of scissors and cut the hair.

Use peroxide to clean it and then just apply triple antibiotic ointment on it about 3 times a day hold the dog for about 5- 10 minutes to make sure she doesn't lick it off.

probably the best way, that i can think of anyways, would be to shave it with a manual razor very carefully and gently around the cut.

Wound closures isn't a good idea. Tuesday is too late for stitches, so a good cleaning, ( preferbly betadyne) and application of an antibiotic ointment to shield it from bacteria would be the best solution.(my vet recommends Neosporin) IF it is really just a superficial wound and not bleeding.

If you don't have betadyne or a drug store open, you can use hydrogen peroxide, diluted equal parts with water that has been boiled and cooled.

It's best to just keep it clean until you can get to the vet- rinse it out with hydrogen peroxide ( it's safe) a couple times a day - keep her indoors and off the carpet (carpets can be clean and still be dirty dirty things -buy the way)... you want to keep her mellow so she doesn't make the cut worse- . good luck
