Can I cut my American Eskimo Dog's Hair (Eskie)? Can I use a Defurminator?

Hi, I have read that it is not safe (unless in a hot climate) to cut your American Eskimo Dog's hair. However, can I use a product called the Furminator? Can you suggest any products that I can use to manage the amount of shedding my dog has? Because he sheds a lot, and I'm trying to figure out a way to make him shed less. Please help me with this problem, and suggest some ways I can reduce my American Eskimo (Eskie) Dog's shedding amount.

Thanks a bunch!

The FURminator works great on shepherds and dogs with similar coats.

On an American Eskimo, the coat is so thick that you really need something to get down to the skin, especially if there is any matting.

Use a slicker brush and comb to get down to the skin.

If you keep the coat free of matting, you may be able to use the FURminator on the Am Eskimo.

Love this tool, use it for work (grooming) but never personally on an American Eskimo....due to the fact that all the ones I've brushed out had to be combed due to a ton of matts.

Are you referring to the brush called the Furminator? If so, then yes you can use that- it's a great product for getting extra hair off.

First, it's NEVER safe to cut an Eskie's hair- and it's WORSE in a hot climate! That puts them at severe risk for overheating and sunburn.

The Furminator does work on Eskie's. However, it's more effective if done at a professional groomer, unless you want to invest in the expensive high velocity blow dryers they use- that's what gets the most hair out. The shampoo and conditioner keep the coat healthy and prevent excess shedding, and the shedding tool helps pull out loose coat. An undercoat rake and slicker brush are also helpful tools. Regular visits to a groomer would probably be cheaper than buying all the equipment yourself, but it's your call. I use this on lots of sled-type dogs with great success.
