No trick answer ... but I was told long hair dogs shed less than short. I'm thinking of getting

I have a german shepherd/husky mix who sheds like crazy. However, a friend has a shorthaired bulldog and she tells me he sheds like crazy too, the only difference is you can't see it as much (unless you are wearing black or navy blue and the dog has light hair). Brushing and grooming help but your going to get shedding from any dog.

A long haired single coated dog (like a Borzoi) CAN shed less than a short haired double coated dog (like a GSD).

It's really all about how much undercoat the dog has, rather than the length of their hair.

I've never seen a shorthaired Dachshund shed very much at all.

Wire- and Long-haired Dachshunds need regular brushing with a bristle brush. Dry shampoo or bathe when necessary. The smooth-haired dachshund has little body odor and can be occasional rubbed down with a damp cloth. Regular exercise is important to the Dachshund, as they have a tendency to put on weight and become lazy. Dachshunds need care to control their diet as they will normally eat whatever is placed before them. Obesity can lead to back problems.

It is not that they shed more, but shed differently.

Longhaired dogs will shed and it will show up in clumps wherever you lay. Easily picked up by hand. Longhaired dogs tend to have a large shedding session twice a year when they "blow out" their coats.

Shorthaired dogs shed consistently, and lightly, everywhere. Easily vacuumed.

Either way you go, I would recommend the product "Dream Coat." It is all of the Omega Fatty Oils and is AMAZING for coats. This product has made my dogs softer, smells fresher, and has cut shedding in half...not to mention it is really good for their skin.

of the 3 dachshund coats the wire will shed the least. The longs and wires need to go to groomers every 2-3 months.

A smooth will shed quite a bit, but with a hounds mitt and baby bottom wipes you can wipe it down daily..the only thing you'd have to do are the nails.

i have two smooth coated miniature dachshunds and they barely shed, but liek another poster said be careful with thier weight and be prepared to have doggie steps to get on couches and beds... be very careful with thier little backs :) but they are awosome dogs and very stubborn at times too

from what i was taught all dogs shed, but to a pet owner it looks like a short hair sheds more. a short hair dogs hair fall on th the floor or furniture when they shed where a lond hair dogs hair matts up in the other hair so you dont see it until u brush it out. the exceptions to this are double coat breed dogs. poms, shepards, chows, malilutes. those type coats the completly drop a bottom coat twice a year and it can be messy if not blown out or brushed out frequently

All warm blooded animals shed and usually about the same amount, but that is dependent upon your location and a lot to do with weather rather than breed or coat length. Long coated dogs shed but the hair doesn't 'drop' so many people are deluded into thinking they don't shed (take it from someone with hair that I sit on, regardless of length, you shed! :) -- they do. The difference is it is imperative that if you get a long coated dog that you brush it frequently, at least daily, to prevent tangles and matting -- just like you do with your hair (if it has any length to it at all) -- otherwise the hair will become a tangled mass and turn into a painful and actually dangerous matt.

So if you want coat that doesn't 'drop' on the floor as much as a shorter coated dog, AND you are willing and able to give proper attention and grooming (needs extra grooming from professional groomers to clean out the ears and trim the feet and various areas -- usually every 4-6 weeks) then a coated breed might be find for you. If you don't/won't have the time or inclination to brush your dog daily at the very least, and get them groomed professionally on a regular basis, then a short coated breed is for you :)

Well, that's not true in some cases. My short-haired cockapoo does not shed. A chow would shed a lot.

BTW, a cockapoo is a cocker spaniel + poodle

from my own experience i can tell you that long and short haired dogs shed about the same. you just dont notice the little hairs from the small dog as easy as the larger dogs hair.

we have a german shepard and a beagle. between the two of them i could make a wig. i find that brushing tham everyday makes a huge difference. you will notice it from the reduction of hair in the vacuum cleaner.
