Dog's hair is thinning & falling out......Doesn't fit the symptoms of diseases found o

I have a 2-1/2 year old Black lab/Border Collie mutt. Recently (within the last month or so) we noticed that on her sides, her hair is thinning. In some places, her hair is coming out in wandering lines; the lines look worm-like in shape, although there is no redness, its not ringworm, she doesn't seem to be itchy, and it is not puffy or anything like that. We feed her quality food, and our other dog (a Bassett Hound) is not experiencing any skin problems. The only info I have found online about hair loss doesn't seem to fit the bill. Any other ideas?

This clearly is not regular shedding. I would make an appointment with the vet immediately to determine the cause and best course of treatment. Since one dog is experiencing the trouble and not the other, I would guess this something like a congenital disorder, not something the dog has come into contact with.

I agree the dog should be checked right away, My Beagle's fur started falling out in little clumps and she had cancer of the spleen. A dog's coat is often the first indicator of an illness. Report It

Could be the adaptivity to the seasonal change. For instance my cat sheds a thick portion of his hair because it started getting really hot here in florida.

my neighbor's dog did that years back when i was living with the 'rents. Their dog was allergic to fleas and he would loose looots of hair when he got them. Check and see if he has skin allergies.

maybe it's mange...

Did you check it with a blacklight? my friend's dog had ringworm, and never itched or got red or puffy, but it glowed yellow green in the blacklight...

IT SOUND LIKE REGULAR SHEDDING. WHEN THE SEASON CHANGES, DOGS SHED TO REGULATE THEIR BODY TEMPERATURE. THE REASON FOR THE IRREGULAR SHEDDING MAY BE BECAUSE HE IS MIXED AND THE TWO MIXES SHED DIFFERENTLY

Your dog may have thyroid problems. I would call the vet.

Could be mange...is there little red bumps or a rash? I would take to vet asap for treatment.

I don't think it sounds like normal shedding it wouldn't be coming out completly- just thinning.

You need to have your dog checked by a qualified veterinarian who can examine your dog and come up with a diagnosis. It can be as simple as a food allergy or as serious as a thyroid condition. You don't want to wait long on things like this as this could very well be an early sign of a serious condition that can be resolved easily if caught soon enough.

One of two things, 1. The dog might be laying on cement it will pull the hair out.

2. It might be "RED MANGE" don't freak out all dogs have red mange if the dogs immune system is down or if the dog is under stress it might bring it on.

My Vet. told me to give my dog "IVERMECTION SOLUTION" by mouth 1/2 a cc. per. 5 lbs. for 45 days it helps my dogs, but call your vet before trying this.

GOOD LUCK!!

If you are doing annual vaccinations, then this could be the cause, especially if vaccines were done recently. Studies now show that vaccines are good for many, many years. All 27 vet universities now only do vaccinations every 3 years.
