Dog chewing hair off?

My dog (pit bull) around 2 years is biting hair off of his leg and tail..Im not sure what is causing this? Some type of allergy maybe? Any suggestions

This could be caused by a number of different issues.

If you dog is on a flea and tick medication, and your vet has ruled out any kind of skin infection or irritation, it's probably allergies. Most people assume it to be food allergies, but dogs are commonly allergic to grass and weeds as well. And it could be an allergy to something within the home itself -- our own dog is allergic to feather %26amp; down pillows, our cats, the type of carpeting we have downstairs and dust. And that's in addition to having food allergies and grass/weed/tree allergies.

To try and narrow this down on your own is pretty hit and miss, simply because there are soooo many possibilities. You might want to consult with your vet, and if all else is ruled out, consider allergy testing. On the other hand, your vet may feel that the problem is simply controllable by administering an antihistamine (over the counter) without even determining the exact cause. It would depend on the severity of the situation and your dog's discomfort.

Get him on a natural food. My dog had this problem it is a food allergy. I recomend Flint river ranch dog food

I have heard of animals biting there fur off when they get stressed out. My Nan once took care of a cousins dog and when it was time to give the dog back, the dog was fun however her cat chewed off most of its fur. The vet said it was because she got stressed when the dog left (even though she hated the dog) Other then that I can't help.

FLEAS He is not biting his hair. He is trying to bite the fleas that has infested him I would bet a whole new litter has hatched somewhere on his body and this poor thing needs attention immediately. Go to the grocery store and buy some flea dip , shampoo or something. Give him a bath, and after you take him out of the tub you will see all the fleas. Probably 100s of them. You no doubt have them all through your house if he is an inside dog. You will also need to bomb your house. They sell them at the grocery store too. Be sure to read all directions before setting these off. You can blow up your house if you have gas pilot lites or any open flame on. You and your pets will need to go away for at least 8 hours while you do this. It may need to be repeated in 10 days to kill the eggs that hatch. Fleas were very bad this year. Good luck to you and your poor dog. If you don't take care of this right away they will be eating you alive also. They can spread from room to room, and your neighbors, if you are in an apartment. You need to take care of this right away.

he's supposed to bite his tail if he is small like 2 years. i think he still needs to teeth. it's like to make his teeth stronger i think. also pit bulls mostly do that cuz i had one and she bit her tail alot
